CONWAY— The University of Central Arkansas’ College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences hosts Native American traditional potter Chase Kahwinhut Earles as an artist-in-residence Tuesday, March 8, through Friday, March 11, 2022.
Earles will showcase a public talk and demonstration over Caddo traditional ceramic making and pit firing from 12-3 p.m. on Friday, March 11 at UCA Alumni Circle. In case of rain, the demonstration will move inside the Schichtl Studio Arts building, room 127.
Earles’ residency comes just in time to correspond with Arkansas’ Archeology month and this year’s UCA’s Jamie C. Brandon Center for Archaeological Research Annual Spring Lecture Series that tunes in and educates on the Caddo culture.
“It is important to have [Earles] come to UCA to share his culture and traditions with the community at large and in a region in which his ancestors once occupied, lived, created pottery, and defined their identity,” Duncan McKinnon, director of the Jamie C. Brandon Center for Archaeological Research said. “Such a visit will allow participants to learn of the rich and dynamic history that define Caddo culture of the past, the present, and into the future.”
Earles will have two other public presentations in McCastlain’s art lecture hall, room 143 from 1:40-2:30 p.m. on both Tuesday, March 8, and Thursday, March, 10. His first presentation will cover Caddo history and culture while his second one will cover Caddo traditional pottery.
For UCA students only, Earles will have two Ceramics workshops in Schichtl Studio Arts, Room 127 from 10:50 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on both Tuesday, March 8 and Thursday, March 10 as well.
Earles is an ambassador of Caddo heritage and tradition and a contemporary artist who has won numerous awards at prominent Native art gatherings such as those at Red Earth Art Center (Oklahoma City), Southwestern Association of Indian Arts (Santa Fe), Cherokee Art Market (Catoosa, OK) and Southeastern Art Show (Ada, OK).
