The Missing Voice in The Shape of Water

By Wells Thompson | March 2, 2018

Editor’s Note- The Academy Awards is March 4, 2018. We have asked our resident Movie Reviewer, Wells Thompson, to review several of the movies up for Academy Awards leading up to the Oscars. It’s not often that we remember which films were nominated in any given year. After the awards are over and the winners are chosen, films aren’t usually described as being nominated for best picture anymore, unless it’s a memorable snub or a really unexpected entry. I bring this up because no matter who wins Best Picture this upcoming Sunday (probably The Post), it’s definitely noteworthy that The Shape of …

Why Perspective Makes a Difference: A Review of Lady Bird

By Wells Thompson | February 23, 2018

Editor’s Note- The Academy Awards is March 4, 2018. We have asked our resident Movie Reviewer, Wells Thompson, to review several of the movies up for Academy Awards leading up to the Oscars. I think everyone knows what I’m talking about when I use the term “Oscar Bait.” Those movies that come out late in the year that don’t really do anything new or special, but hit all the right notes and get showered with praise at the Academy Awards just for existing. Generally, they’re pretty easy to spot: look for a period piece drama that takes itself entirely too seriously and …

How to Make a Classic: The Importance of the Basics in Get Out

By Wells Thompson | February 16, 2018

Editor’s Note- The Academy Awards is March 4, 2018. We have asked our resident Movie Reviewer, Wells Thompson, to review several of the movies up for Academy Awards leading up to the Oscars. Horror as a genre is probably the most marginalized storytelling method in any media. In literature, few horror writers are ever recognized in the literary canon outside of Edgar Allan Poe, and in film, horror is often dismissed as a medium for cheap jump scares and bloody gross-outs. To date, only one horror movie, The Silence of the Lambs, has ever won Best Picture, and only a …

The true story behind St. Valentine’s Day

By Guest Author | February 12, 2018

Editor’s Note – this article by John Lambert first appeared on the Premier Window’s Website. John was nice enough to let us repost the article. The true story behind St. Valentine’s Day is not one of flowers and chocolates but rather of cruelty and violence that helped shape our modern day Cupid fest. A brave Roman priest during the 3rd century A.D. dared to challenge the powers that be, a move that would end in martyrdom, infamy, and overpriced Hallmark cards. As Emperor Claudius II was experiencing massive turmoil throughout his kingdom, the Roman Empire was hanging by a thread. Claudius …

Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri

Review: Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri

By Wells Thompson | February 9, 2018

Editor’s Note- The Academy Awards is March 4, 2018. We have asked our resident Movie Reviewer, Wells Thompson, to review several of the movies up for Academy Awards leading up to the Oscars.  The first review is for Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri. It’s always a surprise when your expectations are subverted, especially when you’re expecting the worst and wind up with the best case scenario. Every Oscar season, I expect to see a list of overblown dramas being recognized with a few great films sprinkled in that have no real chance of winning. Nearly every year, the winners are almost …
