The Arkansas Asset Builders is a new non-profit organizationย provides financial literacy programs and free tax preparation services for many of Conway’s residents.
The founder,ย Joyia Chadwick Yorgey, explained, “The mission of Arkansas Asset Builders is to empower hard-working Arkansans with limited income to flourish as individuals, families, and communities through free tax preparation services and financial literacy programs.”
The founder, Joyia Chadwick Yorgey, began the process of creating the non-profit last year. Yorgey said that she was looking for a volunteer tax preparation service to work with when her family moved to Conway.
Taking Root
After she was unable to find one, the idea began to take root in her heart to start an organization to do the very thing for which she has a tremendous amount of passion.
“We just want to see our hard working Arkansas neighbors who feel limited by their financial circumstances to be able to get beyond those limitations and really thrive in ways they were really designed to be,” she said.
Yorgey, who had always been involved with volunteer tax preparation in previous cities where her family lived, has almost ten years experience.
Phil Fletcher is mentoring Yorgey through his program Replicator.
Even though she has never started a non-profit before and is learning as she goes, Yorgey said, “I am getting to provide the service I am very passionate about.”
Learning More
The program has nine trained volunteers, many from Hendrix, and UCA. Walk in appointments are conducted from 3-8 on Fridays and 9-3 on Saturdays at the CoHO community building on East Robins.
Scheduled appointments are available on Wednesdays and Thursday mornings.
The organization is a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance partner, working with IRS-trained volunteers.
Yorgey said the organization is looking for more board members. Currently, there are four members on the Arkansas Asset Builders board.
